Guess it's fast or feast in here.

Sometimes my son just cracks me up. The heat had me wanting a softserve ice cream. But since there isn't anything within ten minutes of us, we went for second best, Sundaes at Friendly's. We are in so much trouble when Alex hits his teens. The table kitty corner from us had a boy and a girl about 12-13 years old sitting at it. Obviously on a date (her mom was on the other side of the wall) Alex was trying to flirt with her as we waited for our sundaes. So as we almost finished, he climbed over me so that he was sitting at the end of the booth. Better flirting angle I guess. A few minutes later he moves to the other side to sit next to his dad. The entire time he's watching this girl and every time she glanced at him he smiled. I leaned over the table and told him he needed to pick someone closer to his age right now, ten years was too much. He just smiled at me and went back to watching her.

I don't know why this is bothering me still it happened over two weeks ago and it's just so minor in the sceme of things as to be ridiculous but it is. To under stand why you need to know that I was a pretty voracious reader, before child. I still read alot just not as quickly and sometimes there are gaps. I used to go through an average novel (300-350 pages) in a day or two. If it was longer than say 500 pages it might take me 4-5 days. Non-fiction will depend on the subject and how much it reads like a novel how quickly I read it. So biographies, essays and some history move faster than science, psychology or current affairs. Everything now takes longer. 3-5 days for an average novel, a week to week and a half for longer ones. Now this is also compounded by the fact that I usually have 2-3 things I'm reading at a time, magazines and non-fiction titles in addition to the novel. It's just the habit I picked up from my mom. About a month ago I pick up a novel by an author I've read before. Her stuff is nothing spectacular but enjoyable for what it is. Well two weeks later I'm still not halfway through this book. I finished the book of essays I was reading at the time, in 4 days and started a mystery and finished it. Now usually when a book doesn't catch me right off, I give it time or slog my way through (probably from sheer perversity). I got to the point where I couldn't even pick the thing up, not even sure what bothered me about it, so I took it back and got something else. So it's really silly that this is bothering me, must be the hormones.
Hehe all my friends seem to like Kai. I think Ken liked Quinton the most. I know he liked it even more after I told him what it meant, which is Fifth. Eng means five in Chinese, or I should say it's written using the character for five.

Okay I know I wanted it warmer than 60's last week but I specifically said mid 70's would be nice. This over 90 in May is crap. I can deal with 90's in July Aug and even September because it's expected. Not may, especially since we're holding off on the AC because we'll have to use it sparingly come July's 72% rate hike by BGE.Well my ankles are vanishing, and I can no longer see the bones in my foot. I can't remember when the swelling started last time. I know by 7 months I was complaining. I suppose this heat isn't helping. I'm keeping a 16oz glass of water by my desk at all times lately.

I think something bad must have happened to Alex in a waiting room in a past life. He hates them absolutely detests them. Well except the one at the pediatrician's office. I think that's because all the tabels and chairs are kid size and they have windows to let natural light in. Once we're in an exam room he is fine. So I don't know what it is, since most exam rooms don't have outside windows. Ken at first thought it was florescent light, could be who knows. Not looking forward to my appointment tomorrow morning. I hope they take me on time, I don't want to be in that waiting room more than 10 minutes with Alex because nothing, even stuff I bring to entertain him seems to help when we're in a waiting room. he keeps heading for the door.

So from the above you get the idea of how things went Friday morning as we waited for the U/S. At least Ken was there to help for that. later we went to BJs and got all the stuff we were running low on like papertowels and cereal. Saturday we made a run to Lowe's for a gallon of paint for the nursery. I decided to go with green anyway, even though this is a boy. It's just not sage like I would have gone for a girl. A little bluer and brighter. If it cools down later this week I'll get a start painting. Saturday night was the surprise party for Ken's brother. His sister and parents stopped at our house first, I think because his parents needed a break from the car before going to see everyone . So we all waited for Alex to wake from his nap before going over. I was so happy that Alex greeted his YeaYea even calling him by YeaYea. Now we have to work on him greeting his YanYan.

As soon as we got to Dave and Carol's, Ken got put on grill duty. This suited him just fine. Alex spoiled the surprise though. He was playing outside as Dave and Eric drove up, if he had stayed closer to me he wouldn't have been seen but he decided to climb up the little grassy hill and sit down just as they got out of the car. Dinner was pleasant, then we gave Dave his gifts. Alan got graduation gift soon after. We all took a quick trip over to the new house. Honestly I think Dave and Carol will be living on the lower two floors. That is the main floor and the basement. The only thing on the upper level is three bedrooms one of which is being turned into an office/study for the boys when they are home. We came back had ice cream cake for dessert chatted a bit moe then went home. Alex was way past his bed time. I was hoping he'd sleep later than he did Sunday morning. But ten after 7:00 is better than 6:00.

Well almost, he definately had the congested cough I had last week by morning. So he was tired, cranky and a bit listless all day. Nearly fell asleep on the couch an hour before his normal nap time. I was a little annoyed with Ken that morning. I didn't find out until 10 am that he didn't need to leave for the wedding until 2pm. Now when we made arraingments for me to stay home that day it was because he thought the ceremony started at two, so he needed to be there by noon. The bride had been a bit ambiguous on the form about the start time. Well he clarified it at the meeting a weekand a half ago but forgot to let me know. I could have gone to work and just left a couple hours early. Now I have to use a vacation day. he said things went well, the only problem was even though the bride and groom told the caterer to have dinners for the vendors, just like the ones served to the guests. They didn't bring enough food. So Ken and Isabel didn't eat nor did the DJ and his assitant. Now normally this isn't a problem getting fed that is. Usually the caterer at least has sandwiches for the other vendors but since the bride and groom had made arrangments for extra dinners, so they thought, there were no sandwiches. So a hot day and no food mean Ken was kinda hungry when he got home. (They did get cake and some stuff of the dessert table as well as salad and fruit that was "left over") He feels it's tacky to have in his contract to be fed but he was a bit annoyed with the caterer for treating fellow vendors that way.

Monday was a kinda lazy day for most of it. Made banana pancakes for breakfast had leftovers for lunch. Pulled out my hair because of a cranky toddler with a cold, so I was definately ready to go to work that evening. I was supposed to be there at 6 but left and hour early and got a frappichino and cookie, so I could chill out. Ken had hid out in the basement most of the day so I'd been stuck keeping Alex occupied until nap time.

So today I planned on setting up the pool in the back but I come to find out the battery powered air pump is broken. Do you know how many hours it would have taken me to fill that pool using the foot pump. I tried it for about ten minutes and there was no visible change in how much air was in it. Alex and I took a trip to Target. I ended up getting more fingerpaints as well as some 0-3 onsies. I think that's it for now.
So we've gone and revised or boy's name list. We had two names from last time left. I don't see this child as a Kevin. Every Kevin I know is a mischief maker. And I'm not feeling Brian. Ken didn't feel like waiting for me to bring a book home Monday so he went on an online search. Here's what we've come up with. We had a lot of fun either making fun of names or making fun of names with our last name along the way.
Corey
Jeffery (kinda boring)
Kai (Ken didn't like it last time I suggested it but does this time)
Orion
Quinton
Terrance

Went and bought Saturday today. Ken tore out the base boards and pulled up the edges of the carpet. We'll roll it up and take it out next week when he can take it to the dump.Need to think about getting lots of onsies and sleepers for the first 4 months.

I know every pregnant woman complains about this, heh, I know I have before. But having a cold while your pregnant sucks. The only reason I knew I was coming down with something was because my throat got scratchy. I've had post nasal drip since February. At least the Robutussin worked on the congestion so I'm not violently coughing any more. Still coughing, it's just not so bad that it hurts my lower abdomin. Now I'm just running through all the tissues in the house.
I think my little monkey is coming down with it too. He's running a slight fever again except this time it hasn't really gone away after some Tylenol. He's been a bit listless today. Usually he won't sit and watch TV, he watch for 5-10 minutes then go play and I'll turn it off until he complains. Today he's been a bit zombie like. Even fell asleep sitting in front of the couch on the floor (not in his rocker. had him outside fingerpainting that lasted 15 minutes or so. Took him for a walk, he didn't even try to get out of his stroller. And he's barely eaten anything since lunch yesterday. :sigh: Poor baby, didn't even complain as I carried him up for his nap.

I do have a funny story from the other night though. I kept thinking, my son , only my son would have this happen to him. Ken made a rail for the bed he made. It is probably 6 inches taller than the mattress. But he made it with a 1x2 so there is maybe 4 inches between the bottom of the top rail and the mattress itself. Alex doesn't sleep in one spot, he's all over the place though usually by the wall of pillows he's created for himself in the corner. Occasionally he'll slip a foot under the rail. Well Monday night I get to bed just before midnight, the coughing and the congestion just made it hard for me to get comfortable. And I wanted Ken to fall asleep first because that way he wouldn't notice me tossing and turning. Around 1:30 I hear crying. Now if it doesn't stop right away I usually go in and check. I walk in and Alex has slid off the bed under the rail. So his feet are on the floor and his head and shoulders are trapped by the rail. I slide him back up through, check him over then get him settled on his pillows again. I guess the reason this hasn't happened before is I usually leave his elmo goodnight book open in front of the rail so he can push the buttons and listen to the music as he drifts off. Ken didn't when he put him to bed that night. I may have to tell Ken about that trick.

So everyone keep your fingers crossed that the baby co-operates Friday. I have stuff to do as long as I know if it's a boy or girl. If not we're in limbo.

I've been basically go going since Friday, so today I'm zapped. All morning I just felt like lying on the couch and napping. And of course since I said something at work yesterday about Alex letting me sleep in until 7:30 almost every day since we moved him to a bed, he got me up quarter of 7:00. It's funny the last two days he's been a real cuddle bug. This morning I sat with him as he watched Diego. He was sitting between my legs using my belly as a pillow. Yesterday he came up to me hugged me then let me hold him for a good 15 minutes. Not that I mind because it doesn't happen much lately now that he can do a lot of things for himself.

It was a pretty good trip. My trip up to Cumberland ended up a little longer than planned. The ten minute bathroom break at Sidling Hill turned into a half hour because a certain little person needed to burn off some energy. So we got to my Uncle's house around 4:30. Alex was shy at first but Chris won him over with big rocks to climb and play on. By the end of the evening the two were playing with the soccer ball and Alex didn't want to come into go to bed. It ended he was only a half hour past bed time. Of course Chris tired him out so much that he was asleep in minutes. They gave us the larger bedroom and put an air mattress on the floor for Alex. He refused to sleep on it. He fell asleep on the floor right next to it. Woke up once at 4 am. I think being in a strange place combine with watching Monsters Inc so many times he was worried about the door. (There isn't a closet in his room)I got him calmed down and was going to sleep next to him on the air mattress. But he pointed to the big bed and told me to go to bed. I wish I had stayed on the air mattress it was actually more comfortable for my pregnant body.

I had some nice conversations with both my mom and my aunt. Mostly just various family issues. Though at dinner the topic of discussion was schools. Cindy was a guidance councelor at a couple PG county elementary schools. She is now back to teaching at an elementary school, because in Cumberland there were no guidance councelor slots available to her. (No slots and when one opens it seems to go to someone else) Cindy doesn't like to deal with bullshit. She's pretty easy going but her whole philosophy though is do what's best for the children to make sure they have the learning environment they need. So the small town mentality that you have to one up your peers to get a head just annoys her to no end. She feels teachers should work together, help each other with lesson plans and advice on handling special needs children. She doesn't get that type of support in this school, unlike the schools she worked in in DC and PG county.

This moved on to Bush's Every Child Left Behind Program. She thinks the whole reason he developed this idea was to make public schools fail. Then they could turn schools into charter schools, which in turn would be run by his big business freinds. Guess who makes the profits. Her problem with most charter schools has been that they start out good but down the line things slip and the education they give is worse than the public schools. What happens when education of the kids going there conflicts with the profit margin of the school, who wins, not the kids. So interesting night of conversations.

The next morning was pretty relaxed. Everyone took Alex for a walk after breakfast so I got to take a shower in peace. Then Chris suggested to Alex that we go see a real train. In the summer a steam train runs from Cumberland to Frostburg and back daily. Once the weather warms they start runs on the weekends. We weren't sure when it would get there or leave so we tried to get Alex moving. But we lucked out the train had arrived a half hour before we got there and wouldn't be leaving for several hours. Alex got to stand on the back of the caboose, he really liked that. Once there we walked over to the tow path to see the canal boat. We got distracted by the Hertige days activities. There was a local band playing Irish Music. Alex kept moving closer and closer. He got to the tent climbed on to a chair, then flirted with the lady at the end of the row. She was sitting kind of turned, her arm on the chair next to her. Alex kept trying to imitate her between songs. But when the music played he'd be clapping or stomping his feet. After that we walked over to the canal boat then on to look at the canal the were refilling. Finally we walked along the tracks back to the train station. Alex went choochooing down the tracks pretendign he was a train. We got back and I got him settled for a nap. Chris stayed and said he'd bring him over to Patty's when he woke up. I told him to check on him after an hour if he wasn't sleeping just come over.

Mom, Cindy and I went over to help Patty set up for the baby shower. I took a few minutes to go over the album with Denise and Justin, not too many changes to work on. Funny one of our other clients just came back with their revisions Thursday. So now I have work to do. The shower was nice. I took a lot of pictures. I was asked by Denise's mom where I'm hiding the baby. I said under the baby fat of my first one. At 17 weeks I still seem to be between sizes at least in terms of pants. I am mostly wearing maternity tops but all my maternity pants still keep sliding down and I absolutly don't fit into any of my regular pants unless they are stretchy like my yoga pants. Unfortunately they are not work appropriate. I seem to be carrying the weight all over not just in my belly so who know when if I'll pop.

Katie and Doug brought down al lot of their old baby stuff for denise and I to go through. So I came home last night with a car full and I didn't even take that much. Most of what they brough down we things we already had and there is no need for two of. Heh, I think my big purchase(s) this time around will be a hotsling and/or a second carrier like a Mei Tai. I got home around 9:30 and unfortuntely had to get up this morning for work. Some Mother's day huh? They did let me leave early. But I had such a migraine by that time I needed a nap. Ken did make a roast on the rotissery for dinner tonight. He originally planned to roast potatoes on the grill as well but he couldn't with the rotissery. So I made my roast potatoes in the oven. I opened my gift over ice cream after Survivor was over. Ken got me a copy of Dodgeball because the movie cracked me up so much when we rented it.

I found out when I got home last night that my son wasn't eating yesterday just to spite me. I came home and Ken told me not five minutes after I left Alex ate the entire fruit cup I'd put out for his snack as well as both crackers with peanutbutter. He also ate a good portion of his dinner an hour later. Yesterday he wouldn't eat. He barely had breakfast I made lunch for him and put out two cookies (big mistake) he ate the cookies and didn't touch anything else. When he asked for more cookies I told him no. I also refused to give him his cup of milk after his nap until he ate. Because he will fill up on milk and not eat. Obviously he was hungry, it's kind of funny guess I get to look forward to more of these little battles, seeing who is more stubborn.

The shower I was at Saturday was nice. It was so good to see Monette she was just glowing. It was also nice to see her and Tony together in person. Their love of each other and laughter just shines through. Alex liked the room we the shower was held in. The air/heating vent was in a bench that ran along the window. It looked just like train tracks. So he was all set and ran his trains up and down the room most of the afternoon. Monette has twin nephews a few months younger than Alex. One of them would come up grab a train run it down the wall, drop it then take off. He'd be back five minutes later to do it all again. At first Alex got all protective of his trains and would wrap his arms around his favorite ones. By the end of the afternoon he just kind of shrugged it off. He may get the hang of this sharing thing yet.

So today Alex and I got out the fingerpaints. It kept him occupied for a good hour and a half. I think I shot over a hundred images. Not sure if this is a good thing or bad.
